Background of the Study

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other resuscitation techniques are critical in emergency departments (EDs) for improving patient survival rates. The role of nurses in resuscitation has evolved significantly, with many healthcare facilities implementing nurse-led resuscitation training to enhance emergency response and patient outcomes (American Heart Association [AHA], 2024). Properly trained nurses can initiate life-saving measures before a physician arrives, reducing the time to intervention and increasing survival chances (Johnson et al., 2023).

Studies indicate that nurse-led resuscitation training improves both the confidence and competency of nurses in handling critical emergencies, leading to better patient survival rates (Smith et al., 2024). In Nigeria, where emergency medical services are often under-resourced, the empowerment of nurses through structured resuscitation training can bridge critical gaps in emergency care delivery (Bello & Yusuf, 2023).

At Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lafia, emergency departments handle a high volume of critically ill patients, many of whom require immediate resuscitation. However, the effectiveness of nurse-led resuscitation training on patient survival rates has not been adequately studied. Understanding its impact can provide valuable insights for improving emergency care protocols and patient outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Delayed or ineffective resuscitation in emergency departments contributes to preventable mortality, particularly in resource-limited settings (Eze et al., 2024). While physicians are traditionally responsible for leading resuscitation efforts, studies show that training nurses to initiate and coordinate resuscitation significantly improves survival outcomes (Taylor & Ahmed, 2023). However, there is limited empirical evidence on the effectiveness of nurse-led resuscitation training in Nigerian healthcare facilities.

At FMC Lafia, the impact of such training on patient survival rates remains largely unexplored. Without proper assessment, healthcare institutions may overlook the potential benefits of structured nurse-led resuscitation programs. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led resuscitation training on survival rates in the emergency department of FMC Lafia.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of nurse-led resuscitation training on patient survival rates in the emergency department at FMC Lafia.

2. To examine the level of confidence and competency of nurses in performing resuscitation after receiving structured training.

3. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of nurse-led resuscitation training in FMC Lafia.

Research Questions

1. How does nurse-led resuscitation training influence patient survival rates in the emergency department?

2. What is the effect of resuscitation training on nurses’ confidence and competency levels?

3. What challenges hinder the effective implementation of nurse-led resuscitation training?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led resuscitation training significantly improves patient survival rates in the emergency department.

2. Nurses who undergo structured resuscitation training demonstrate higher confidence and competency levels.

3. Institutional and resource-related challenges affect the successful implementation of nurse-led resuscitation training.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in the emergency department at FMC Lafia. It will evaluate the impact of resuscitation training on patient survival rates. Limitations include potential variations in individual nurse performance, differences in patient conditions, and challenges in tracking long-term survival outcomes.

Definitions of Terms

• Nurse-Led Resuscitation Training: A structured program that equips nurses with the skills to initiate and manage resuscitation efforts in emergency settings.

• Survival Rate: The percentage of patients who survive after receiving emergency resuscitation interventions.

• Emergency Department (ED): A hospital unit specializing in the treatment of urgent and life-threatening medical conditions.
